Arpaio and McCain: Profiles in Courage

Greetings fellow Divas!

Your muu muu clad correspondent returns, with some observations about the 2 arguably most prominent men in our state.

Exhibit A is our stalwart and plucky lilliputian Maricopa County Sheriff.  A friend of mine was at a Valley Citizen’s League luncheon where Joe was speaking and taking questions.  He said he raised his hand and asked the Sheriff why he was focusing on illegal immigrants when there are tens of thousands of unserved felony warrants - you know, actual dangerous criminals - in the county.    With high dudgeon,  America’s Toughest Sheriff replied that it is, get this, not his job to go after them.  It is, he went on to say, the job of the police departments. You know, the REAL police.

Now we move on to the better half of our Senatorial delegation….Well come on, the other half is Kyl!

John McCain was at a campaign stop in Hilton Head, SC, speaking before an adoring throng of at least a dozen people. A woman stood up and asked, “How do we beat the bitch?”

Yet another conservative woman showing everyone what a paragon of virtue and social decorum she is. But I digress.

McCain responded by politely but firmly asking the woman to refrain from using such a demeaning and offensive term to describe his opponent. He said that he preferred to stick to the issues and not let the campaign degenerate into personal attacks.

Psyche!! I was pulling y’alls legs there. What McCain really said was: “That’s an excellent question.” Then he went on to say that he “respected” Senator Clinton. Thanks John. I sure feel respected by the way you handled that.

After taking a bit of heat on CNN for letting that ‘bitch’ comment slide, his campaign issued a statement criticizing the criticizer. And they are using the incident to raise money!

Are Joe and John a couple of tough hombres, or what?

I just saw the video where McCain was asked, “How do we beat the bitch?” First, I have no words to describe the bitch that asked the question other than despicable and perhaps ignorant.

McCain has obviously improved his public presentation of himself since his “bomb, bomb, Iran” days. He did not immediately laugh and respond to the bitch who asked the question. He looked down, turned about 45 degrees and then laughed while asking someone behind him, “May I have the translation?”

Poor John. It’s so hard for him to keep a straight face.

Nice posts. Pervez Arpaio is a fascinating character study. He is jealous of other public officials’ getting more press coverage than him, and clearly thinks our community would be a better place if his judgments were simply the last word — on every subject — kind of like Bush’s daydream of how much easier it would be to be a dictator.

A little off topic, but related to Joe: have you seen that someone has launched a recall effort for him and Andrew Thomas? Not sure what they’re trying to accomplish. If they make the ballot, the newspapers are saying it won’t likely be voted on until the Nov. elections, when they are both up for re-election anyway. It seems these efforts would be better focused on helping to elect their opponents.
