Ellen Malcolm of EMILY’s List opened up her remarks at last year’s Majority Council conference by commenting that she had “flirted” with Obama. She went on to analyze the election in her usual brilliant fashion, that the initial attraction comes from the fact that many of us hate politics although we love the policies. Obama frames himself as policy, as compared to Clinton who seems to be politics. But when you scratch the surface and look at what the general election is going to be like (very ugly politics of fear and slime), and look to see who can actually win, your choice is Hillary. She went on to detail many other reasons to support Hillary, but this seemed an appropriate lead in to this very fine blog posting a friend just sent me:
Date Obama but Marry Hillary: Happy Valentine’s Day
Who among us can resist Obama’s boyish charm, oratorical flourishes, the “messianic” crowds that follow him everywhere and his message of unity and hope? I know I can’t. When I was younger, I couldn’t resist men who have a certain “savoir faire”, a “master of the universe” attitude towards their present and a “manifest destiny” outlook towards their future. I was the plodding student, the one who did her homework, who obsessed about her grades, who prepared for contingencies real and far-fetched and was grateful when disaster did not strike. I took nothing for granted. So, of course, I was attracted to men who seemed unchained by mortal constraints and unfettered by doubt.
Twenty-five years later, I see the world differently. As my husband can attest, not only do I want a man who claims to know power tools but a man who can wield them, a man who not only knows where to buy the groceries but who knows what should be on the grocery list and where they should be stored in the pantry. I am less impressed by professed skill sets, best-laid plans, and home improvement ambitions as I am in his proven ability to fix the leaky toilet, manage roof contractors and keep the family fed and in clean clothes in my absence. These are the unglamorous, tedious and thankless chores that sustain a “marriage” and maintain a household.
In three long decades of painstaking attention to details, dogged persistence and political nimbleness, Sen. Hillary Clinton has shown that she can breathe life and form to the ideals that she and Sen. Obama espouse on the campaign trail. Sen. Obama may have these qualities as well but his mettle has not been forged in the crucible of the national political arena — a forum that often rewards perception at the expense of substance, unforgiving of the slightest missteps and susceptible to “me-too” stampedes.
Flirt, date and be swept away by Sen. Obama but in the end, bring Sen. Clinton home to your parents and marry her because she will help us put food on the table, clothes on our backs, a roof over our heads and give our children the chance to grow up in the America of Sen. Obama’s dreams.

I hear these arguments over and over from people that support HRC. Here is the problem: Hillary unites the Republican Party. She is limited in the support she can garner (47% disapproval rating). Will the Republicans go after Obama, definitely, but there will be a contingent of Republicans who will either sit out election instead of voting for McCain (Imagine him as the Republican Joe Lieberman) or vote would vote for Obama that will turnout (for McCain) if Hillary is the nominee.
I have said this before, but there is also the problem of Bill Clinton. We lost a lot of opportunities in the 90’s because of his lack of impulse control. I am not willing to risk that again. The best analogy that I can come up with is that (if this were baseball) HRC is a bunt and Obama is swinging for a homerun.
Let me throw a little water on some of HRC best loved arguments. Obama has never faced a strong opponent. Ok, I would say that HRC is tough. He faced very tough primary fights for both Senate seats (and won). His campaign has adjusted to the dynamics of this race very well. I cannot say the same for her campaign. It is reasonable to say that he has never faced a tough Republican opponent, but I would argue that neither has she. Rick Lazio is not what I would consider a tough opponent in New York and she faced token opposition in 2006. I can tell you what she had never faced, a contested primary which is why she is struggling now.
35 years of experience? Please, she was in law school 35 years ago. She spent more time on the board of Wal-Mart than the US Senate. She has solid experience as a lawyer and some non-profit experience. She has done some good things, but she mischaracterizes her experience which bothers me.
I have one last thing to say to HRC supporters, your argument that Obama supporters are somehow naive or foolish is insulting. I can speak as a veteran of Democratic politics for 14 years and over 20 campaigns that I know what it takes to win.
I understand your views will not change, but please HRC supporters stop with condescension. Like it or not, Obama has ever bit the claim to the presidency as HRC, but with little of the sense of entitlement.
A dem, I have to second your comment on the experience issue. Both Clinton and Obama have impressive resumes and life histories, but let’s face it, if experience were truly the trump card we’d be looking at a race between Joe Biden and Bill Richardson right now. Richardson especially made a big point of touting his years in Congress, as a diplomat, and as a Governor. The voters didn’t buy it. I’m not worried about Obama’s lack of experience because the good judgement he shows in the advisors he surrounds himself with is apparent. GWB surrounded himself with cronies, many of whom had decades of experience. They did a “heckuva job” didn’t they?
I also agree with the your take condescension leveled against Obama supporters, which is particularly galling considering much of it is coming from the same people who have spent years bemoaning that lack of young people participating and the lack of enthusiasm for Dem candidates in general. You’d think a lot of people being excited about one of our candidates was a bad thing or something.
Yeah, Hillary’s 35 years of experience is a pick and choose operation. She certainly doesn’t want to say too much about her first “experience” with national healthcare when the insurance industry and the right wing handed her her own butt and literally obliterated national healthcare from the national discussion.
She also disconnects herself from NAFTA, now saying that she opposed it but it was rammed down her throat because she was just the “first lady” and could not oppose her husband’s legislation.
Loadacrap no matter how you spin it.
Hillary is now attacking Obama 24/7 and Bill has had his muzzle removed and is back on the attack himself.
Hillary fans accuse Obama supporters of worshipping a messiah while you yourselves just simply worship a woman who is essentially a chameleon.
Not only that, she has a big, obnoxious mouth that I just don’t think we should have to listen to. No wonder she hates Obama’s oratory skills.
Diva Readers (all three of you):
Here is an example of a totally meaningless statement:
“In three long decades of painstaking attention to details, dogged persistence and political nimbleness, Sen. Hillary Clinton has shown that she can breathe life and form to the ideals that she and Sen. Obama espouse on the campaign trail.”
Talk about the life she breathed into national healthcare. We now have 50 million uninsured people. Think of how many people died without the proper medical attention because of Hillary’s ability to “breath life” into an ideal.
Think of all the middle class Americans who lost their jobs because of NAFTA. Think of the erosion of the manufacturing sector in America’s heartland.
OOOPS, I forgot. Hillary didn’t support NAFTA. She was just a “first lady.”
So tell me again about 35 years of experience.
Tell me about all of the Clinton success with Islamic militant terrorism and how they so effectively dealt with Osama bin Laden in the late 90’s especially after the African embassy bombings.
The Clintons were fighting about Monica back then weren/t they?
Of course, there is Hillary’s Senate careeer? What has she done? Oh, she voted to invade Iraq.
She breathes life into war and occupation.
