Don’t be hatin’ on my plagiarizing unpatriotic Obama cult, yo.

Great night so far, with Barack taking Wisconsin by double digits. A few thoughts as I sip red wine and watch the speeches on the ‘SPAN.
It was, I admit, a clever swipe by the Clinton campaign at Barack for his unattributed borrowing of a riff by Deval Patrick in his WI Jefferson Jackson speech. I’m pretty sure it was the work of newly retained consultant John Sasso, who derailed Joe Biden back in 1988 by exposing his lifting of another man’s speech. That said, this “plagiarism” meme, and the traction it has gotten, exasperates me. It reveals how utterly clueless some Dems can be, wanting our candidates to be the same kind of smartypants elitists that we think we are.
Yet the Republicans have been handing our asses to us at the local, state, and national level at a disconcerting rate for 3 decades now. Why? Because they have message discipline. Have you ever heard a Republican give a speech that didn’t sound like pretty much every other speech given by a Republican?
God. Family. Flag. Scapegoat women and brown people. Cut taxes.
Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
They don’t get all schoolmarm-ish because one of them inveighed against gay welfare grubbing Islamo-fascist illegal immigrants using remarkably similar syntax to another one. They all say the same thing. All the time.
Besides, talent borrows and genius steals. Haven’t you realized that from popular music, already?
If I were the undisputed dictator of the Democratic party I would park every candidate, from school board to Congress, in front of Axelrod-written Obama speech footage until their eyeballs and ears bled. Until they got the message and could repeat it. Verbatim. Oh Yes, We Can. Get it? Got it? Good. No, your snowflake-unique wonkishly tedious dissertation chock full of policy details doesn’t freaking win elections for us, so get on the same page and on message.
Now, onto the other faux outrage that was commanding time in the news cycle. Michelle Obama wasn’t sufficiently proud of America.
Okay, what I want to know is: Why is it that conservatives can disparage America and rail against our going-to-hell-in-a-handbasket culture until the cows come home and NOBODY impugns their patriotism? Lou Dobbs had his Depends undergarment all in a wad over Mrs. Obama’s comment, yet he devotes an entire hour a day to our BROKEN borders, BROKEN government, BROKEN schools. America is BROKEN! But poor old Lou gets the vapors over a Democrat not being slaveringly uncritical to the U S of A . It’s not just curmudgeonly old racists like him. How about what (the late) Jerry Falwell and (still breathing and unfortunately owning a TV network) Pat Robertson have said about our country? According to them, America sucks so bad that God rains terrorist attacks and natural disasters upon us. Dinesh D’Souza, pseudo-intellectual right wing think tank hack, penned a best-seller about how Muslims want to bomb us because of uppity women and sexy TV shows. Conservatives dis America, while draping themselves in the flag. It’s bullhockey, and it’s about time we progressives snatched that undeserved mantle from them once and for all. They’re the ones who hate America, not us.
Finally, there’s the really tiresome “cult” meme that has been floated about Obama supporters. Let me just say, as someone with firsthand experience witnessing an actual cult destroy people’s lives, stick a sock in it. Seriously. If you haven’t spent all your money, been cut off from your close relationships, and had your mind and life controlled by some sick megalomanaical whackjob, then it ain’t a cult! If you are so jaded and bitter that you have to construct some lame-ass self-indulgent and cynical excuse as to why a certain candidate is doing better among young people and new Democratic voters than yours is, then that is your problem. That’s all I’ve got to say about that.
