Here’s the link: Supervisors are asked to rein in Sheriff I’m quoted in the article. What happened was I was one of the first people in line for the meeting and was asked to make a comment at the meeting during public remarks. By half past 8am dozens of people representing immigrants and labor and community organizations had gathered for the 9am meeting. There were also a handful of clueless hate spewing Neanderthals uh I mean Arpaio supporters in attendance.
There was an interesting item on the agenda, which the AZ Republic article mentions. The Board of Supervisors was being asked to approve the receipt of thousands in contributions to the MCSO by mouthbreathing xenophobic troglodytes uh I mean concerned citizens. If you’ll recall, the Sheriff’s office was operating in the red until recently, and the meanie Governor had taken some of Joe’s funding away. Which caused Joe and Lou Dobbs to pitch a screaming hissyfit. With the exception of non-troglodytic Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox, the Board voted to approve accepting the contributions.
It was interesting and frustrating to witness the Arpaio freaks at the meeting defend a fascist authoritarian thug in his quest to intimidate brown people. It’s like no matter what evidence is presented to them, they are resolute in their conviction that this stubby little comb-overed narcissist is their public safety messiah.
Seriously, you could almost admire them, if they weren’t so freaking annoying. One of their little tribe of losers, a woman with a very bad platinum dye job, was sitting behind me. She kept making obnoxious stage-whispery comments throughout the proceedings. When a man from South Phoenix rose to describe how longer response times made him fearful, she hissed “Get a gun!” When a woman testified before the Board that she was about to lose her home because her ARM had reset and her monthly mortgage was now double, Dye Job called her “stupid”. Immature idiot. Of course, not to be outdone in that department, I began doing my own stage whisper thing back at her. Okay, so I have some personal growth to do myself, sue me. But I made sure that Dye Job and Tom Husband (Repub. county chair), who was sitting next to her, got a good earful of what dribbling morons I believe them to be.
It sucks that I should be forced to waste psychic energy on people like this. On the other hand, they’re the ones who really ought to be pitied. It’s like the single biggest accomplishment in their lives is being born an American. They were born. They peaked. That’s it. I mean, how sad is that? The problem is the spite with which they project their insecurities and the effect it has on public safety and civil rights.
