“God … Is Gonna Strike Out His Hand Against, Yes, … The United States Of America!”

Would you say that “strike out his hand against” has a similar meaning to “damn”? I’m admittedly not as up on Scripture as some are but I’m going to go with – yes.

I’m eager to see how the right wing is going spin this. So far we’ve learned that when Republicans make a blatant affirmative action hire, it’s a “game changer” and you better not even discuss it because then you’re a sexist and Republicans know from whence they speak on that on accounta they’re the real feminists now. When a Republican daughter is an unwed mother it’s a private family matter and/or an occasion for celebration of the choices made by people who don’t want you to be able to make choices. And abstinence only sex ed works so stop saying that it doesn’t, even though it, um, doesn’t.

We already know that when conservative evangelicals decry sin-soaked American culture and openly yearn for natural disasters to befall American cities, or gloat smugly when terrorists attack one nobody suggests they are less than patriotic. But when a liberal pastor delivered harsh words for America from the pulpit of the Trinity Church in Chicago, words that were rooted in Biblical passages, it was all they could talk about.
