Regular People vs. Extremists

I keep hearing conservatives calling progressives “Liberal Extremists”, while describing themselves and others with their beliefs as “Regular People”. Where did this idea come from and how has it taken such deep root in the American psyche?
Progressives think the government should not be in the business of:
- Making decisions about your reproductive options
- Making decisions about who you are allowed to marry
- Dictating whether and to whom you pray
- Invading a sovereign country for their oil
Progressives think the government should be in the business of:
- Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals
- Giving every American access to a decent public education
- Working with scientists to reduce global warming
You know… extremist stuff like that. It’s almost as if progressives believe that the government should NOT control your personal life but SHOULD control the public safety!
Conservatives seem to think the government should NOT be in the business of:
- Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals
- Giving every American access to a decent public education
- Working with scientists to reduce global warming
Conservatives also seem to think that the government SHOULD be in the business of:
- Making decisions about your reproductive options
- Making decisions about who you are allowed to marry
- Dictating whether and to whom you pray
- Invading a sovereign country for their oil
As every REGULAR person knows, it’s the governments JOB to police who I sleep with, who I worship, how I choose to have children, and when those children should die in service to the greed of those in power. But keeping our streets safe, our air clean, and educating our youth so that they can compete in a global market? Come on you Latte-drinking, Arugula-Eating, Clean Air-Breathing Godless Baby-Killers! That’s Liberal extremism!
If these are our definitions of “regular” and “extremist”… put me in the extremist category.

When people ask why I’m a liberal I give them the simple answer that I believe that corporations should be regulated and people should be free. It’s about protecting the little guy from the big people.

Should not control your personal life except when any money is involved, that is.
