A Democrat with money? How dare she!

Oh lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz? Actually, I don’t need help to do that; I just need a good credit score and the money to back it up.

Color me the proud owner of a 2008 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C350. Sing it, Janis.

It sure is a purty consolation prize and will be even purtier when I get a new Obama sticker to decorate the back window with. I’m happy with the purchase, but it was a hard upgrade to make.

I went from a 2006 VW Jetta TDI (averaging 40-something miles per gallon) to a luxury car. As a practical Democrat, I felt a little guilty even considering a Mercedes. Silly, no? What’s wrong with getting a nice car, especially if you spend as much time in the car as I do? Granted, the driving has tapered off a bit, but I still drive Casa Grande to N. Scottsdale on a regular basis. The drive helped me justify the purchase, but it shouldn’t have factored into the decision. I was ready to get a new car, and the Mercedes is the one I chose. But the guilt… Democrats aren’t supposed to live in luxury, are they?

Just look at how much attention Obama’s $1.65 million house got – enough that I know it was $1.65 million. I even had a Republican throw that in my face as how Obama is out of touch with voters because he’s a multi-millionaire. I did promptly respond with how out of touch Obama’s opponent is (using the fact McSame didn’t know how many houses he owns and how he married his money – at least Obama earned his). But there’s still a stigma for Democrats who have money – and a double standard for Republicans, because it’s okay if a Repug has a few million hanging around.

The thing about the Obama/McSame situation is that I don’t care how much either of their houses cost or how much they have in the bank. I do care that McSame is clueless about how much he has, though. It worries me in that hypothetical situation where the Supreme Court appoints McSame to the Presidency and he proves to be as out of touch as he comes across. If you’re careless and clueless about your own finances, how can you hope to manage the country’s finances during the worst economic crisis in our lifetime?

This should be the money discussion people are talking about, but when talking to my Repug. friend and hearing my friend defend McSame’s financial naivete while lambasting Obama’s expensive house…well, that just makes me stop and call BS on that double standard. As if Democrats aren’t allowed to have money.

Which brings me back to my wonderful new car. I love it. I’m glad I got it. And I can’t wait to toss my Democratic pride all over it.

By the way, my Jetta is for sale. If you know anyone who’s interested in a great car that gets great gas mileage, drop me a line in the comments.

When a Democrat, say you, or Barack Obama, becomes an actual embodiment of the Bootstraps narrative, by raising themselves up from a modest background and succeeding it drives conservatives nuts. They are all about a meritocracy, so long as it is confined to a certain class.

Oh, what am I saying? They don’t care about merit at all! The good positions are for the wealthy sons of the ‘right’ families. Even if said sons graduate at the bottom of their class at the Naval Academy, and after more than 2 decades in Congress cannot explain basic economic concepts and give responses to foreign policy queries that are worthy of a Miss Teen South Carolina contestent.

When presented with a Barack Obama, they can barely contain their fear and hostility. When they call him “elitist” it’s not about his money. He is smarter, and better than they are and they know it.

I’m with Donna. Nothing to be ashamed of. You and your husband have both worked very hard to get where you are. You have sacrificed and you have succeeded. You get to spend your money as you like. And if that means you want to drive a comfortable and beautiful car, then you go girl. Never feel guilty. You’re a Diva! ;)
