The Latest Stunt

Yesterday Krista pointed out McCain’s latest stunt and asked our opinions of it.  Is it all just smoke and mirrors?  Or is he really serious about the current economic situation and the 2.5 page outline that Bush and Paulsen are trying to rush through congress?

Last night, Rachel Maddow interviewed Chris Dodd, the banking committee chairman.  During that interview, he said he’s heard from Barack Obama several times about this situation, and that he knows Obama has spoken to Henry Paulsen as well.  He also said he has not heard even one time from John McCain.

Shouldn’t a Senator who is so concerned about this issue that he is suspending his presidential campaign to rush back to Washington have had at least ONE phone call with the banking committee chairman?

I see two possibilities for this lack of communication between McCain and Dodd:

  1. Not only does McCain not know how to email, he also doesn’t know how to use the phone, and therefore has no choice but to return to Washington to check in with Dodd and the banking committee.
  2. This is a political stunt designed to make voters THINK he is taking this more seriously than Obama.

As much as I disparage John McCain, I truly doubt that number 1 is accurate.  Making number 2 the more likely situation.  This is a stunt designed to make McCain LOOK like he’s taking things seriously, and acting presidential.  However, the fact is that Obama is ACTUALLY taking things seriously and acting presidential, and he’s just not advertising it.  Thank you Chris Dodd for letting us know the real score.  And once again, Shame on you, Senator McCain.

    Here’s the thing…
If I’m really stupid enough to buy that McCain is sincere in his reasons for pulling this stunt, then don’t I have to be wondering how someone who can’t walk and chew gum at the same time can handle being President? Like, will he have one of those take-a-number thingys outside of the oval office and tell each crisis that it has to wait its turn?
