Arpaio, Unaccredited.
Posted by: Donna
Seriously, he is. Despite his protestations, in numerous ads that are polluting my TV viewing, about how Arpaio’s such a mensch who is saving taxpayer dollars through his thrifty tent gulags and he saves cute puppies too(!), the fact is that he is out of compliance with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care and they have yanked his certification.
On September 25th, the Commission sent a letter to Sheriff Arpaio announcing the “…termination of accreditation of all Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office jails for failure to maintain compliance with national standards and providing false information about such compliance.” IOW, they called the Commission a bunch of liars.
Arpaio fans may think, big deal, a bunch of goody-goodys who care about the basic rights of detainees are up in arms about the treatment of said detainees. However, the fact is that Arizona statutes (11-459.01 and 36-402) mandate compliance with the standards of the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. The court case is Graves vs. Arpaio (CIV-1977-00479-PHX-NVW).
In case you believe that “this won’t affect me, I’m not a criminal”, remember that Arizona has some of the toughest traffic and DUI laws on the books. Even Republican legislators get nipped for driving after tippling. You can be corralled for nonpayment of traffic tickets or a probation violation. God forbid you are a diabetic or suffering from some other medical condition if you are incarcerated in Maricopa County. The County Jail doesn’t care if you live or die.

Very well articulated.
Ew, ew, ew, have you seen the really horrible ad the repubs are running against Saban??
They are disgusting. Dan did a press conference yesterday and was visibly shaken. The “independent expenditure” behind them is none other than the Arizona Republican Party. Sick bastards. Believe me, a post is in the works about it.
I am back and could not agree more! I am collecting reasons why Joe has to go and want everyone to submit a reason. Please visit “He’s Back” on facebook or send all comments to hesbackaz@gmail.com! Comments will be posted on facebook and hesback.org.
Speaking as a former employee of Correctional Health Services, though it may make me sound sour or disgruntled, they got everything they deserve.
I was terminated in June this year and the main problem the “staff” had with me is that I -respected- the inmates and in return they -respected- me. They hated that I treated the inmates like the person they are. Now keep in mind, when you go through training and through orientation they make sure to remind you, had it not been for them committing a crime to wind up in jail, they’d be seeing their doctor on the outside for the same care they seek in the jail. When you’re out of orientation, this is complete and utter bullshit. Inmates are animals to many CHS employees. Their are a number of nurse i can count on my hands who could care less if they provided care to them, they just see it is a chore they get paid for.
Unfortunately, those like myself who were actually friendly with the inmates and -did- care about their well being, get axed. I definitely have many stories i’m -sure- The New Times would love to get their hands on, as well as other former employees wishing to finally be heard.
Just as a reminder, and J.T. can surely back this up, but the health care in the Jail is provided by Correctional Health, which is a completely separate department from the Sheriff’s Office.
Joe Arpaio can’t tell them what to do, and they probably wouldn’t do it just out of spite anyway. This is just another one of the many fallacious strikes against Joe that his detractors like to blather on about.
If he’s so bad, I wouldn’t think you’d have to make stuff up.
Now, the democratic candidate is something else altogether. His character weakness is recorded on video, and comes from his own lips.

What do you mean, “they wouldn’t do it out of spite”, Bob? Are you admitting that Joe doesn’t have control over the people working in his jails?
Where Bob is technically right, this is the way it works in the jail.
The jail is MCSO’s house. That is their building. Healthcare is provided by Correctional Health Services, a completely -different- department from MCSO. Order’s don’t come down from Sheriff Joe, they come down from the head honcho’s with CHS. Why people get so confused and think it’s Sheriff Joe, is because CHS works in MCSO’s house. They work -under- MCSO but are -not- affiliated with MCSO.
The problem that ties in with Sheriff Joe is, even though he does not provide the healthcare, it is -his- duty as Sheriff to make sure CHS is adequately providing healthcare to -HIS- inmates…. which he didn’t do and which CHS does not and this is why they are in the predicament they are in.
