Sometimes I get the sense that the Lege doesn’t give much thought to unintended consequences

It happens when I see bills like HB2357, which would allow public school students to “pray or engage in religious activities or religious expression before, during and after the school day in the same manner and to the same extent that students may engage in nonreligious activities or expression.” David Safier of Blog for Arizona gives a good analysis of it. I agree with him that this is yet another unnecessary expenditure of the statutory power of the Legislature over a minor matter that could be easily handled at the local school board level. The school had no business telling a student she couldn’t have an image of Jesus on the cross on her notebook, but there was no need to create a state law over it.

Still, this episode tickles this Diva’s funny bone because y’all know that by “religious” the GOP sponsor of this bill means the “Judeo-Christian” kind (with heavy, heavy emphasis on the Christian part of that descriptor). What he, and his counterparts who voted for it, fail to have noticed about the young’uns of today is that a) they’re a lot less religious than their forebears and b) they’re awful savvy on the Internets. Undoubtedly at least a few of our fresh-faced Arizona youth have discovered that modern theological phenomena known as the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. We feel strongly that the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is nothing but a coincidence, put in place by Him.

Let me just state for the record that I am NOT advocating, encouraging, nor inciting the Pastafarian students of Arizona public schools to, say, break out in loud prayers in the middle of class to pay homage to the FSM. I’m just saying, you know, it could happen, and hilarity might ensue.

    I dunno, Donna:

With the new budget plan I expect that there are already more people praying on school property.
