Who knew there were so many shy wealthy people in Ahwatukee?

I caught this piece in the Ahwatukee Buzz today. It’s from last week. I had to laugh at the blatant way that Ahwatukee Chamber of Commerce President Terri Kimble shilled for Sal DiCiccio.

Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio and Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce president and chief executive officer Terri Kimble now say they had more than there (sic) share of tense moments before they announced last week that the $25,000 show will go on as planned.

“I am just ecstatic,” said Kimble, who took the job in April. “And also relieved.”

Geez, not too obvious are we Terri? Neither is Sal.

But after reaching an initial goal of raising $20,000, Kimble received the bad news from Phoenix that the city’s bill for security, traffic control and permits would be $10,000 — $5,000 more than planned. The tab for Red, White and Boom was no longer $20,000 but $25,000.

So the first weekend in June, DiCiccio, who both lives in Ahwatukee and represents its council district, got on the phone to friends and acquaintances and raised the additional money.

“I’ll tell you the phone calls weren’t easy,” he said. “I called 12 or 15 people who I knew would be able to give money on short notice.”

DiCiccio said the donors are not businesses but “individuals who want to remain anonymous.”

Sal, on the other hand, has no such inclination. I have to admit I’m curious over the supposed reticence of all the donors, though. Not a single one of them wanted to be identified for a puff piece in the Ahwatukee Republic praising them for helping to save the fireworks? That’s odd. I’d call it pretty uncharacteristic of most rich people to want their philanthropy to go unmentioned. I’m not making assumptions about it, and it was a very nice and generous thing of all of them to do, whoever they are. I just think it’s odd, the not wanting to be recognized for it, that’s all.

Once again Sal proves the only thing he is good for is milking a group of developers who will ultimately pay the price in not fireworks for the city, but big developmenht deals that will make the voters very unhappy. Same old Sal, different election.

Sal has worried me from the start, he is always up to no good… if it’s starting fights with other council members or pulling off odd public stunts – my vote in a few months will clearly be for Kennedy – Sal was bad news the first time and then we (the community) got stuck with him again against our will.
