Is the smuggling of illegal immigrants not a major problem in Maricopa County? Wasn't the Federal ICE agreement with the Maricopa Sheriff's office only changed when Janet Napolitano took over at Homeland Security? Is there not a state law which allows the Sheriff to enforce immigration law? Have the efforts to recall the local sheriff because of this issue not failed overwhelmingly? If you read my post or the linked article you would see that Sheriff Joe is using someone's interpretation of a federal law, rather than a real federal law, to justify his racial profiling crime sweeps where he terrorizes people for being brown and driving w/a busted taillight. He does not have the authority to do what he is doing. And, as a tax-paying citizen in Maricopa County, I would prefer that law enforcement, in these tight budget times w/limited resources and all, were using those resources a little more wisely. Um, no. The reality is that if he proceeds without the 287g agreement we'll likely see more Sec. 1987 actions against the sheriff and the county, which will add to the millions of liabilities he's already created for county taxpayers.
