Boys Behaving Really Badly
Posted by: Katie
AZ GOP Executive Director Brett Mecum is facing legal trouble again, this time for using the party’s voter file to find a woman’s address and show up uninvited to a party at her house. In the circles I run in, we would call that stalking. The woman has filed a legal complaint, in which she states:
I did not invite Brett Mecum. He is rather creepy and intimidating around women. I did not want to expose my guests to that kind of individual. I was shocked to see him show up at my party. He had never been to my house, and I had never told him where I lived. I asked him how he found my address, and he responded “I looked it up on Voter Vault, I called a staffer to look it up for me there.”… [Mecum] alluded to power, connections, and authority as a result of his position as Executive Director of the Arizona Republican Party. I have also seen what malicious things he has done to others and do not want to be subjected to similar retaliatory actions.
According to this article by Dawn Teo at Huffington Post, GOP Chair Randy Pullen has blown off previous allegations of Mecum’s sexual harassment, even refusing to meet with complaintants.
Is this appalling? Yes. Am I surprised? No. The fact is that men continue to use their positions of power to harass women just because they can and other men laugh this off like it’s no big deal. But it’s wrong and illegal, and I’m glad someone finally had the courage to file a criminal complaint. The GOP rank-and-file should be calling for both of their resignations.

The way that Pullen and other GOP honchos have enabled Mecum and his pals in their harassment of women is shocking, yet all-too-predictible. Recall that Pullen helped Mecum, Ryan Ducharme, and Jeff Dial oust Charles Jensen as head of Republican Professionals, after Jensen froze them out of the social group due to complaints of their inappropriate behavior.
Ok lets start
The one with my heart (yeah, yeah I’ve got one) has been around both state & city govenment for years. Apparently these arrogant little cretins think because they are both male (ahem) and Republican, rules don’t apply. Would be most interesting if this poor lady files a civil suit aginst the state GOP for allowing this thing to get personal information on her. Liability!
Katie, I don’t. want to squabble, but there is an old girl network. Unfortunately most likely out of necessity,. I”ve met a number of them. Tough strong women.
Donna, if you are spying I’m downstairs
Katie, I’ve reread your comment from downstairs and I feel I’ve misenterepreted it.. While there is a wonderful network of tough ladies, from what I gather from your comment, the ol’ boy network still rules. This of course is a good thing, because otherwise we wouldn’t be in the mess we………….
Keep in mind too that Brett Mecum was clocked driving 109 on an urban freeway.
Granted he got it tossed because it was a photo-radar but whatever your opinion of them, he’s willing to risk other people’s lives (what else would you call 109 in the city?) Interpretation: your life itself means nothing to this man.
Is there anything he WON’T do?
Katie,
“The fact is that men continue to use their positions of power to harass women just because they can ”
I could not agree more. What is your opinion on this?

Right, Alan, calling a woman a bad word is totally the same as stalking her. Granted, it was rude of him but I doubt she felt threatened by it. That’s the problem with sexist dudes like you, Alan. You don’t “get” women because you don’t think we’re fully human like you are. We’re like these sort of walking sex and baby robots to you so you just sort of figure we respond the same to all similar input.
Donna,
” I doubt she felt threatened by it. .”
I just wanted to see how hypocritical you would get. You have two separate issues. Men mistreating women and your hatred of Republicans. You really shouldn’t get the two confused, but you did.
You excused Senator Schumer because he is one of you. If the honorable Senator had an R. after his title you’d have gone after him.
I would also like to know what in my previous comment would lead you to believe this.
“You don’t “get” women because you don’t think we’re fully human like you are. We’re like these sort of walking sex and baby robots to you so you just sort of figure we respond the same to all similar input.”
Hey! It’s BB Gun Cheeto Boy! The words just pour out of me about you.. Pendantic, sophmoric, bully, misogyynist, condescending.. Quite the qualities of a gentelm……. nope can”t say it..
Say hi to your mom. Remember to clean up the…ick . basement.
Alan, if this were Democratic Party officials, I would be calling for their resignation, but it’s not, and it’s disturbing that no one is. And that this is a pattern of behavior – this isn’t the first accusation against Mecum, just the first criminal complaint.
If Sen. Schumer was rude to the flight attendant and called her a name, he should apologize. If he were my Senator, I would ask him to do so. What he did is not illegal. You are trying to compare apples and oranges.
Katie,
If the posted material about Mecum is accurate, then I would condemn him. I agree that Mecum’s alleged behavior is worse than Senator Schumer’s.
The topic was men using their positions of power to harass women. I am pointing out that the men in your Democratic Party are no paragons of virtue. Certainly President Clinton used the power of his office to harass and do more to women.
Yeah, Donna, while you’re at it, why didn’t you include in your post that the nazis totally sucked? It’s really important you make sure to point that out.
Who wants to crash the Mecum family holiday party with me?
dude,
I bet you’re the kind of man that would be approved of by this board. PC to the third power.
