See the April 23rd Arizona Capital Times for the full story of how Pearce neutralized the AZ Chamber, but here’s the short version:
Pearce agreed to remove a major section of the bill that would have allowed county attorney to subpoena records from businesses suspected of hiring illegal aliens in return for the Chamber remaining neutral on SB1070.
Glen Hamer didn’t want to piss off the wingnuts and figured this was the best deal they could hope for: Focus on landscapers and maids rather than auditing business who employ them, keep them tax cuts coming and we’ll all be happy.
Do you suppose if Rasmussen included this bit of information about the bill in the polling it did on it that it would still have 70% approval?
Zelph (bless his heart) pushed the issue with Jay Lawrence of KTAR. From his facebook page yesterday:
I just mentioned this arrangement on the air with Jay Lawrence of KTAR and he said he would ask Russell Pearce about it when he has him on as a guest tomorrow evening (7pm KTAR 92.3 FM) Call in number in Phx: 277-KTAR
How did Sen. Pearce respond?
The very last question before Sen. Pearce was about to leave, Jay finally asked him if he’d cut any deals with the AZ Chamber of Commerce to get SB1070 passed. “Absolutely not”, answered Pearce. Jay then asked a followup question about the portion of the bill giving subpoena power to county attorneys. Pearce admitted that this section had been removed and that “we’ll live to fight about this another day.” No time for another question about at whose behest this section had been removed or why. Sen. Pearce appears to be lying about this matter…
Ya think? And why is it that only the Capitol Times ran the story? This should be getting reported everywhere.
