It’s official, Arizona does not see color.

Governor Brewer signed a bill banning ethnic studies into law today.
That means you better not teach any classes that might “…advocate ethnic solidarity, that are designed primarily for students of a particular race or that promote resentment toward a certain ethnic group.”
So don’t teach about Greek or Roman mythology, because the descendants of the Huns or the Sassanids might be offended.
Don’t teach about Christianity because, well, that could be an affront to a bunch of ethnic groups.
Can’t teach about Columbus, the Pilgrims, Manifest Destiny, the Trail of Tears, or the Civil War.
Or the Robber Barons.
Or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Or Cesar Chavez.
Or the Civil Rights Act.
Or Ayn Rand (she was mad at Russian Communists.)
Basically, we can’t teach Arizona students anything about any group of people, ever. It might lead to resentment. We are officially hooked on phonics. Because we don’t see color here. Except when we’re profiling for undocumented immigrants.

What’s it going to take to get you to actually read the law, rather than perpetuate misquotes?
The law states:
The Legislature finds and declares that public school pupils should be taught to treat and value each other as individuals and not based on ethnic background.
A school district or charter school in this state shall not include in its program of instruction any courses or classes that either:
1. Are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group.
2. Advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.
White people can’t be racist anymore, because white people elected Barack Obama and white people supported the civil rights movement.
But oh yeah, he needs to prove he’s a Real American and also the civil rights movement was a socialist plot by lazy ingrates to lose the cold war.
Seraphim, what’s it going to take to get you to see that the law is Tom Horne’s petty personal vendetta against a program in Tucson and an opportunity for him to preen for Republican primary voters?
What is going to take for people to actually go to the State Lege’s website, find the bill and copy and paste the actual damn law?
If those who are harping on how wonderful the law is, why not post the language and say “SEE HOW BEAUTIFUL IT IS?!”
More disgusting garbage from the radical right wing. Ethnic studies is taught all over the country. Tom Horne is an extremist. I think it’s Alzheimers. He used to be a Democrat until his brain began to deteriorate, just like Reagan turned Republican when his dementia began.
The law does not exclude ethnic studies. It excludes a *particular kind* of ethnic studies.
The law is intended to combat this:

‘Nuff said.
Laws shouldn’t be designed to exclude a “particular kind” of anything, Seraphim. I could put up youtubes of White supremacist or teabagger rallies, to convince you that we should stop teaching European or American history, but they wouldn’t legitimize that argument.
