Wow

The front page of the Republic featured a story about 19 business groups, led by the AZ Chamber, taking a brave stance on immigration reform. In the case of the AZ Chamber of Commerce in particular, by “brave” I mean, “realizing their craven silence and capitulation weren’t going unnoticed”. But that wasn’t enough.

Nor was Glenn Hamer’s open letter full of crocodile tears over Barry Wong’s hideous “cut their power off” statement. Touching, really. Such fortitude it takes to write a column full of scathing condemnation for the GOP candidate that his group didn’t endorse.

But nope, still not enough. Today was Rehabilitate the AZ Chamber’s Image Day at the Ministry of Truth. The Republic’s editorial was yet another regurgitation of the Chamber’s talking points – and man is it clear that they got the memo.

They will be pilloried. They will be accused of being part of some monumental “pro-amnesty, open-borders conspiracy.” That charge is the cudgel extremists use to silence reasoned debate.

Oh noes!! Meanwhile, I’ll continue to characterize them as the cowardly, two-faced, cutting-deals-with-Russell-Pearce, Jan Brewer endorsing, tax cuts and cheap labor loving arm of the Arizona GOP that they are.

But here’s the part of the Republic editorial that had me guffawing:

Like those businesspeople who are speaking up, it’s time for others in leadership roles to risk speaking truth in the face of popular distortions.

Religious leaders: Where are you? Arizona needs to hear from you.

Academics: Arizona needs to hear from you.

Sports figures and entertainers: You have a unique ability to reach people. Arizona needs to hear from you.

Politicians: Arizona needs you to speak the truth despite the polls.

What is popular is not always what is right. What’s been happening in Arizona is not right.

Anyone but me remember Los Suns? Remember politicians, religious leaders, entertainers, academics speaking out against bigotry and for immigration reform and being mocked or told to behave by the Republic? Never happened. Down the memory hole it goes.

The AZ Chamber of Commerce is the one group that could actually have stopped this whole mess with SB1070, had they taken a stand. They didn’t and now they are seeing the results of their cowardice. Of course, they are still endorsing those who voted for SB1070. Cheap labor, low taxes – that’s what Glenn Hamer and the AZ Chamber really stand for.

Some people on the Huff Post threw huge hissy fits when I pointed out that it is racism fueling this. “Since when is following the rule of law racist…”

    *rolls eyes*

    WTF?
Soooo. The Republic and the C of C are going to the streets to protrest the law they never really .stood against. These nitwits were pretty quiet until the cheap,no peep workers started leaving.

Hey! If Russel (Joe Jr.) Pearce can propose legislation in violation of the 14th Amend., why can’t Barry (Iam) Wong join the AZ Gooper circus?

Although there were 19 business groups that signed on, I noticed a ton of business/chamber groups missing.

Someone should point out to the Republic that the political and religious leaders that have come out against SB1070 and the accompanying madness have largely been ignored or derided as extremists.

Caught your comment on FB’s blog.

Like I have touched on all along, why would the Az Chamber and the Az Hispanic Chamber be on two different pages??

Seems like after the “secret hand shake deal”, that Sen Pearce cut to get SB 1070 passed. That the Az Chamber has been trying to figure out how to have BOTH side of the argument??

Though, we already know about the “private prisons” deal.
Is there anybody in the Chamber you may be able to obtain some straight answers from Donna??

I will continue to STRONGLY suggest,

that in light of Bud Selig’s banal statement refusing to move the 2011 All Star game from Phoenix,

And with the national media focusing there that day,

July 12, 2011 would be a great day for a protest.

I might also add, that the very same day (Thursday) that this editorial appeared, my letter to the editor pointing out yet another flaw in Brewer’s silly argument appeared about an inch away in the print edition.

Maybe I should have identified myself as a member of ‘academia.’
