My, someone’s got his whinypants on today
Posted by: Donna
Today’s AZ Republic editorial, clearly written by a very butthurt Doug MacEachern, was a whinefest over how The Daily Show interviewed a dumb wingnut and he came off like, well, a dumb wingnut:
A less articulate critic of the program would be impossible to find. The segment was a cringe-inducing humiliation of the tongue-tied man.
Which, of course, is why the producers sought out the hapless Mr. Hicks. Most real reporters look to board President Mark Stegeman, a University of Arizona economics instuctor, for fair understanding of the ethnic-studies issue.
But that wasn’t what “The Daily Show” came looking for. It came for the cheap laughs, and poor Mr. Hicks gave them up by the bucketful.
Awwwwwwww. Look, it’s not like there aren’t dumb liberals. There probably aren’t as many, and that’s been the finding of research (sorry conservatives), but dimbulb inarticulate liberals can be found if you look hard enough. And had TDS found the dumbest and most tongue-tied liberal in Tucson to defend Mexican American Studies you can bet today’s Republic editorial would have a very different tone. It wouldn’t be all “poor Miguel got set up for cheap laughs”. MacEachern would be harrumphing himself into a lather about how that cheeky Daily Show reporter proved, proved I tell you, everything the good upright scared white folks have been saying about that dastardly ethnic studies.
But that’s not what happened. The TDS producer went to Tucson, swung a dead cat, and hit the first right wing ignoramus in its path. Who happened to be a duly elected member of the school board. Hey Doug, if you want Arizona’s Republican voters to elect a better caliber of wingnut, you should do a better job of persuading them to do so in your columns.

Liberals being mean?
Hail yeah!
The good news is he gets to phone this kind in, the bad news is he literally phones it in. “No, I’m not going to use that computer thingy to send it! Just you keep writing missy!”

Okay, TC, you owe me a new keyboard for that.
The Daily Show and Jon Stewart has never been funny. Liberals never are.
Oh, Mike. The Daily Show and Jon Stewart are quite funny, but it requires an actual sense of humor, and the capability for abstract thought.
On the other hand, the conservative sense of humor is pretty boring (and often disturbing), usually based on lame stereotypes, and/or the ridicule of someone who has suffered some sort of misfortune.
But I think the major difference is that conservatives lack the ability (and confidence) to laugh at themselves.
Michael, liberals never have a sense of humor and are generally mad all the time.
Conservatives have a great sense of humor, that’s why we laugh at liberals all the time.
i think we’re missing the point here. this ethnic studies school program got banned. i’ve gotten the rich white anglo saxon viewpoint of history a majority of the time in school. why is it bad if we get another viewpoint. i, being white, appreciated the other viewpoints and historical moments that were different than what i was taught throughout k-12.
Chris, I assure you we’re not missing the point. Doug MacEachern et al. are missing the point.
Machearn is a bigoted wingnut loon.. He has zero integrity as a journalist, and should’ve been fired long ago..

Truth
