Embrace the inevitability!

Lot of reporting in the political blogosphere about the Rasmussen poll showing Terry Goddard outpacing potential GOP rivals Jan Brewer and pardoned felon Fife Symington, who inexplicably manages to get 37% support.

Terry Goddard (D): 42
Jan Brewer (R-inc): 35
Some other: 13
Not sure: 11

Terry Goddard (D): 44
Fife Symington (R): 37
Some other: 9
Not sure: 10
(MoE: ±4.5%)

Normally I’m not one to demand that Democrats fall behind a particular candidate this early in the game. I like primaries, in theory. Healthy competition in a primary should (ostensibly) yield the best and most viable candidate for the general election. In the case of Terry Goddard, I’m going to make an exception. I want everyone to get behind Terry. Now. No equivocating, quibbling, or handwringing about whoever the GOP candidate is likely to be. Whoever it is, it’s going to be Len Munsil 2.0 so stop worrying. No Republican who even appears to be slightly less insane than a latrine rat has a prayer of getting through their primary. This ain’t Barry Goldwater’s Republican Party we’ve got here. It’s Michele Bachmann’s. It’s Sylvia “6000 Years” Allen’s.

The biggest worry I hear expressed by Democratic activists is that Goddard has run for Governor in the past and lost. Goddard lost to Symington in 1990. I didn’t live in Arizona at the time but I do have vivid memories of that year. I was dating a guy named Tom Wiley. He had a mullet. The mullet was a popular hairstyle in 1990. You know what else happened in 1990? This guy had an album at the top of the charts for several weeks.

Bottom line is that mistakes were made in 1990. Let’s move on and live in the present, shall we?

All support should be for Symington. C’mon,a pardoned felon? Who better to represent core Republican values? I’m sure he would hold plenty of Town Haul meetings..

How about working to defeat McCain? Instead of having Dems in a primary for Governor, spread out and tackle McCain, too. We hae to have viable candidates in all levels of races just in case the Nut Jobs get out and knock one of their own off the ballot.

I’m not ready to get behind a candidate for Governor. I didn’t care for Terry when he served as Mayor, and I’m not sure what good he has done as AG. I’d like to see him take an hard stance on an issue — whether I agree with him or not. I’d like to see a strong democrat challenge him in the primary. I’m just not sure who that would be.
