Jeff Flake?

I’d like to know why Jeff Flake has been largely MIA on this immigration law, on account of how I hear he’s “good on immigration” all the time, and conservatives are crowing about the supposed “rift” between Grijalva and Giffords on the law and proposed boycotts. Why hasn’t Flake issued a resounding denunciation of the law? I mean, he’s so “good on immigration” and all, that I’d expect a really scathing response to a law that targets the immigrant community the way this one does.

Here’s the statement he made to Politico:

“Immigration is the federal government’s responsibility, and we have failed to address it,” Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said in a statement to POLITICO. “State and local governments, particularly in Arizona, are bearing the brunt of our inaction, so I don’t blame the Arizona legislature for trying to pick up the slack.”

Flake said the immigration measure “isn’t the bill I would have written, but it’s difficult to criticize the state for trying to deal with a problem created by the federal government.”

Those are what we call weasel words, and I am not surprised in the least that Flake would resort to them. It’s more than we got out of the Chamber of Commerce or Goldwater but still pretty lame. Then again, the Chamber did cut that deal to strip out meaningful employer enforcement so maybe Flake truly doesn’t find much to object to in the law.
