The double standard in effect

Amanda Marcotte made a great point in Raw Story a few months ago about what she calls “tone policing”.

The thing about tone policing that is so galling to liberals particularly is it only goes one way. Even while the tone police cluck their tongues and accuse “both sides” of lowering the level of discourse, the only examples they ever give a crap about are the ones—often straw examples, of course–coming from the left…

…I call it the Grandpa’s Making Racist Jokes Again problem. Nine times out of 10, if someone is saying something horribly offensive, and someone else calls them out for it, everyone will turn on the person calling them out for it. You see this every time people get more up in arms because someone used the term “racist” or “sexist”, but not so much over the racist or sexist sh*& that caused the word to be articulated.

I completely agree with this and would simply add that no one tone polices like right wingers themselves do. By which I mean they obsess over what “tones” liberals are using, not their own, of course, and will often manufacture reasons to be outraged by something a Democrat has said. Here are a couple recent examples from here in AZ. First, we have Shane Wikfors, who has held a number of prominent positions in Arizona Republican politics:

Video of Obama senior advisor @pfeiffer44 calling Republicans suicide bombers: http://youtu.be/ikm42k9yhWo #civility

Whenever you see the #civility hashtag you know some epic whining over nothing has preceded it. You can see at the link how I suggested to Shane that he might want to look up the word “metaphor” so that he could understand that Dan Pfeiffer was not claiming that Republican members of Congress are actual suicide bombers. But it was to no avail.

The second example comes from my own comments section in a recent post, where Rep. John Kavanagh took me to task for describing Andy Tobin as a “right wing demagogue” in reference to Tobin saying that the President hates this country.

Amusing.
In the same post that Duval calls for the “politics of respect,” you call Tobin a “right wing demagogue.”

Yes, I did. There’s nothing metaphorical about accusing the President of hating this country and if any Democrat in the Arizona Legislature had made that claim of President Bush when he was in office you can bet they would be compelled to retract and apologize. In a subsequent comment Kavanagh suggested Fred Duval might want to pay me to stay away from him. Because being in any way associated with a liberal blogger who hurt John Kavanagh’s fee fees by describing Andy Tobin accurately would totally bring down Fred’s campaign, I guess. I have a feeling they’re going to play the “radical left wing associations” card intently against Fred Duval. They really don’t have much else.

Here’s another example of the “tone policing” hypocrisy at work, from the AZ Republic Top 10 Tweets of the Week List, number 5:

Sept. 24: This AZ state rep says: #DefundObamacare b/c the people of the the great State of Arizona believe in doctors, not beurocrats! #MakeDCListen

— Republican state Rep. @AdamKwasman, who is exploring a run for Congress. Noting the misspelling of “bureaucrat,” politico @RobbieSherwood retweeted it with, “Stay in school, kids.” To which Kwasman responded: “#bureaucrats. Leave it to radical left to get that word perfectly-spelled every time.”

Kwasman’s comeback was a snappy zinger, I have to admit, and I do know Robbie Sherwood and am sure he is every bit as delighted as I am to be called a “radical leftist” by someone like Adam Kwasman. But is there even the slightest chance that whomever Kwasman supports for Governor in the GOP primary will need to worry about that shockingly(!) uncivil(!) thing Kwasman said about Robbie Sherwood? Highly doubtful. Similarly, it’s very unlikely that Rep. Kavanagh’s meanspirited bigotry against transgender people this past session will dampen the enthusiasm of accepting his endorsement for whichever GOP candidate Kavanagh chooses to bestow it on. Because of the double standard on “tone” they so richly benefit from, Republicans have to go pretty far (like, into Todd Akin territory) before they become an embarrassment to their fellow Republicans.

Regarding your statement, “In a subsequent comment Kavanagh suggested Fred Duval might want to pay me to stay away from him. Because being in any way associated with a liberal blogger who hurt John Kavanagh’s fee fees by describing Andy Tobin accurately would totally bring down Fred’s campaign, I guess,” you guessed wrong. I simply meant that a candidate whose platform includes civility might want to distance himself or herself from a person who calls opponents demagogues.

I would also like to add that your statement that I harbor “meanspirited (sic) bigotry against transgender people” is wrong and uncivil. How can you know what I think? How can you know my “spirit?” That statement also suggests that you have developed an unhealthy level of cynicism.

What you said about transgender people is at the link and many other people have reported on it. It is also a matter of public record as anyone can watch the footage of the hearing. You may not believe yourself to be bigoted against them, but that is not your call to make. It really speaks to an incredible amount of privilege and (unearned) sense of entitlement on your part that you expect others to tolerate your shabby treatment of them simply because you claim not to be acting out of malice.

Good advice John (Pearces Poodle) Kavanagh. It would be a good idea, otherwise the company you keep might just taint peoples opinion of you.

Check out this VIDEO at about the 2:45 mark. Look who’s behind Rusty and about to wet himself by being with the big boys.
