Maricopa County hearts Terry Goddard

Local politicos are buzzing about a poll conducted in Maricopa County in late April. Great news for Terry Goddard:

CURRENT READINGS FOR ATTORNEY GENERAL TERRY GODDARD
Exc/Gd Fair Poor/VP No Opinion
Total population 38 31 13 18
Registered voters 42 31 11 16
Republicans 45 27 14 14
Independents 32 38 10 20
Democrats 43 30 10 17

Note that he actually does slightly better (though within MOE) with Republicans! In Maricopa County! At the Dem State Committee meeting this weekend folks were talking about Rep. Jeff Flake as a probable GOP contender. Out of what will undoubtedly be a crowded Republican field, Flake would be a most formidable opponent against Goddard. Still, despite his name prominence and likability, Flake will have to run mostly on his Congressional record and conservative/libertarian ideology. “I never brought a dime back to the state! Vote for me!” isn’t necessarily the most compelling campaign platform in a time of deep budget deficits. His support for immigration might also make the GOP primary a challenge for him. A big challenge, if his opponents make an issue of it (which they will). Goddard will have competence and experience as AZ Attorney General behind him, as well as a reputation as a solid and steady moderate. Again, great news. Love the Terry.

Wow… Arizona Governor Jeff Flake. 4 years where every single bill, sponsored by anyone, would get vetoed.

I genuinely admire Jeff Flake’s strong convictions & integrity, but it’s those same convictions that would make him a terrible governor. He’d shut down the state government if there were a line in a budget he didn’t agree with.

I have no inclination toward Jeff Flake, but sometimes governments need to be shut down. The bank would surely shut you down, should your funds expire.

And yes, I’m all for deflating these bloated education budgets. Too much money for virtually nothing in return especially in Arizona.

Btw, I encourage you to oppose Terry Goddard should he decide to stay in the race.
