They’re all akin to Akin

A lot of people are understandably shocked by MO Rep. Todd Akin’s claim that “legitimate” rape victims rarely get pregnant due to our special babymaking lady secretions shutting down when it’s a true rape, unlike those strumpets who fake being raped in order to get abortion coverage. Those of us who have engaged with anti-choicers lo these many years can tell you Akin’s belief is shockingly common their circles. This is a movement rife with crackpot unscientific theories accepted as truth by its followers, such as the morning after pill causing abortion and abortion causing breast cancer and suicides. A substantial number of myths about rape have currency in the anti-choice movement as well, such as that abortion is more harmful psychologically to rape victims than carrying the pregnancy to term. This is certainly not the first time I’ve heard the “real rape victims can’t get pregnant” canard. Here’s a well known right wing pundit tweeting it earlier today:

Chris Loesch Akin tweet

Here’s a popular anti-abortion website on the topic of rape and incest pregnancies:

In a healthy, peaceful marriage, the miscarriage rate ranges up to about 15%. In this case, we have incredible emotional trauma. Her body is upset. Even if she conceives, the miscarriage rate is higher than in a more normal pregnancy. If she loses 20% of 600, there are 450 left. Finally, we must factor in one of the most important reasons why a rape victim rarely gets pregnant, and that is psychic trauma. Every woman is aware that stress and emotional factors can alter her menstrual cycle. To get pregnant and stay pregnant, a woman’s body must produce a very sophisticated mix of hormones. Hormone production is controlled by a part of the brain which is easily influenced by emotions. There’s no greater emotional trauma that can be experienced by a woman than an assault rape. This can radically upset her possibility of ovulation, fertilization, implantation and even nurturing of a pregnancy.

So this notion the GOP is furiously peddling that Todd Akin is a lone wolf is simply false. VP candidate Paul Ryan shares identical views and worked with Akin on a bill that would redefine the rape exemption for government coverage of abortion to include “forcible” rapes only. No coverage for statutory rape and certainly none for trollops who were asking for it by being at a party or bar and having some guy slip a drug in their drink. Every member of the AZ Republican Congressional delegation voted for it, including Jeff Flake, who took to Twitter yesterday to reassure us ladies that he is all for rape and incest exceptions:

Jeff Flake abortion

Nonsense. The mindset that leads Flake to think there should be distinctions made between types of rape and vote accordingly is the same one Todd Akin has. Flake and Akin have identical voting records on abortion and 100% ratings from the National Right to Life. And while Flake is probably too smart to believe personally that “legitimate” rape victims can ward off pregnancy, he’s sure as hell willing to cater to the voting demographic that does believe things like that. On the stupil/evil continuum I put Flake pretty far on the evil side. If you don’t think he’s evil realize that Flake also voted in 2011 to let women die in the ER if their health care provider had a “moral objection” to performing or even referring her for a lifesaving abortion. So I don’t believe anything he says about favoring exceptions. Reps Franks, Gosar, Quayle, and Schweikert also voted for that bill. Just like Todd Akin.

Is Chris Loesch a guy? Anyway, these GUYS are all creepy! May even be borderline nuts.
What is disturbing to me is that the Republican machine have encouraged Atkin to step aside now to let some other Republican put their name on the ballot instead. Cowards!! He is stupid, we all know it, but they are so drooling over a chance to upend a Democrat that the democratic process can go to hades – it’s all good.

    Jeff Flake is no better.
