We cannot stand by while American businesses and working people are being helped, my friends!

From The Hill:

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will lead Republican opposition to the popular cash-for-clunkers program in an attempt to block additional funding when it comes up for consideration in the Senate this week.

The House voted 316 to 109 Friday to pour $2 billion more into the program, which has proved so popular that it is running out of money before anticipated end-date in November.

Wonder what Jim Click will think of that?

“My children and grandchildren are going to have to pay for these cars and we’re helping auto dealers while there are thousands of other small businesses that aren’t getting the help,” said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) during an appearance on Fox News Sunday. “The role of the federal government is not to run the used car business.”

“We’re definitely going to debate it and I’ve heard that John McCain is going to stand up and try to stop it and I’m going to work with him every way that I can,” he said. “This is crazy to try to rush this thing through again.”

“I just think this is a great example of the stupidity that’s coming out of Washington right now, and I think Americans realize the numbers that we’re throwing around don’t work,” DeMint added.

Wow, you’d think no other businesses besides car manufacturers and auto dealers depend on cars being sold. None at all. No small businesses, certainly. Why I’m sure that the small businesses in the Greater Detroit area have not been affected at all by the downturn in auto manufacturing. And I bet that auto dealerships such as those owned by Mr. Click in Tucson are of no consequence to the various businesses that surround them. But seriously, this behavior by DeMint and McCain has little to do with economics and everything to do with a nonstop Republican hatchet job on Barack Obama. The little bit having to do with economics is pique over seeing the government spending money in a way that might trickle up to some peons instead of flowing straight to executive bonuses on Wall Street. Lord knows we can’t have that!

The article says that Claire McCaskill (D-MO) might not support the extension but she tweeted that she wants to “study and read what the House passed”.

This is an outstanding example of government intervention in an industry that has worked. Because of the bailouts, the structured bankruptcy and this program, hundreds of thousands of jobs in auto factories, warehouses, parts suppliers and dealerships have been saved.

That’s the real reason why government intervention in the auto industry is so unpopular with Republicans. What has already happened challenges their mantra that government spending can’t save jobs.

Well…Sen. McCaskill should read the bill. But then she should read all the bills. Or a darn good summary!

If Sen DeMint is caring about his children and grandchildren then he should support this bill as it will make it a lot easier for them to BREATHE with the better fuel efficientcy.
